Switzerland's Jungfrau Region: The Ultimate Travel Guide

The Jungfrau region is arguably one of the prettiest places in the world — it's at the top of my list. The Northface Trail in Mürren is the most beautiful hike I've ever done. Here is everything you need to know to plan your trip.

The Jungfrau region of Switzerland is arguably one of the prettiest places in the world. It is definitely at the top of my list. The natural beauty here is unparalleled — and there is something to do for all ages, whether you're an avid hiker, a James Bond fan, or just someone who wants to sit on a terrace and look at mountains with a fondue in front of you.

Where to Base Yourself

Mürren is my top recommendation for a base in the Jungfrau region. It's a small car-free village perched on the edge of a cliff with spectacular views — hotels, a couple of shops, restaurants, and easy access to gondolas and hiking trails in every direction. Staying here puts you at the center of everything.

Grindelwald is a larger, more accessible town in the valley below — great for shopping, dining, and hotels, and worth a visit even if you're not based there. Interlaken is the main transport hub and good for a night if you're arriving or departing.

The Best Hikes in the Jungfrau Region

Northface Trail — My Favorite Hike in the World

This is the prettiest hike I have ever done. It starts and ends in Mürren, isn't too strenuous, and delivers gorgeous scenery at every single turn. You may encounter cows grazing on the hillside and even run into a St. Bernard. It doesn't get more quintessentially Switzerland than this. Do not skip this one.

Panorama Trail

One of the best hikes in the region — not too strenuous, takes about an hour and a half, and the views are extraordinary throughout. A great option for all fitness levels.

Eiger Trail

A beautiful 4.5-mile hike that is mostly downhill, following the base of the famous Eiger North Face. Dramatic scenery with the sheer rock face towering above you the whole way.

Must-Do Experiences

Jungfraujoch — Top of Europe

One of the highest railway stations in Europe and an absolute must-see in the region. You take a gondola and then a mountain train to reach the summit at 3,454 meters. The views of the Aletsch Glacier — the longest glacier in the Alps — are genuinely awe-inspiring. Allow a full half-day for this excursion and book in advance.

Schilthorn — Where James Bond Was Filmed

One of the tallest peaks in the region and the location of James Bond's 1969 film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." Take the cable car from Mürren to the revolving Piz Gloria restaurant at the summit. The 360-degree views are spectacular and on a clear day you can see the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau all at once.

Birg Thrill Walk

Stop here on your way up or down from Schilthorn — platforms and ladders attached to the side of the mountain with extraordinary views and a genuine adrenaline rush. Perfect for thrill-seekers.

"The Northface Trail is the most beautiful hike I have ever done. Gorgeous scenery at every turn, cows on the hillside, and a view that makes you stop and just breathe."

Practical Tips

  • Buy a Jungfrau Travel Pass for unlimited travel on all trains, gondolas, and cable cars in the region — it pays for itself quickly
  • Book Jungfraujoch tickets in advance — there are limited slots and it sells out, especially in summer
  • Weather in the Alps changes fast — always bring a layer and waterproofs even on sunny days
  • The Fondue Gondola books up quickly — reserve as far in advance as possible
  • Mürren is car-free — accessible only by cable car and train, which adds to the magic
  • For thrill-seekers: paragliding is available from Interlaken and Mürren and is absolutely spectacular
